Surveys are high-stakes research methods. They’re used to drive big decisions, and they’re also a very public examples of a researcher’s work. Learn the scientific principles that are essential for designing survey questions that get reliable data.

Master the Cognitive Response Process—the psychological framework that explains exactly how respondents go through the process of answering survey questions—using examples from The Psychology of Survey Response (Tourangeau et al., 2000). You will learn how to think from the respondent’s mindset and write valid survey questions that avoid measurement errors in your data. With this model, you'll design surveys that generate defensible, decision-grade data stakeholders use to make roadmap decisions, set KPIs, and prioritize features.

This workshop goes beyond "rules of thumb" to link each survey design guideline to the cognitive mechanisms behind response behavior. The best practices we cover go deeper than what you typically find on the internet. We’ll discuss when shorter questions are not better, and when you should use vague quantifiers versus more specific response metrics. You'll explore how question structure affects data quality at every stage of the response process: how hidden assumptions create uninterpretable data, how memory recall accuracy drives guessing and more ‘noise’ in your data, how misaligned scale midpoints skew data, and how response editing distorts your data.

Through real examples of good and bad survey design, you'll learn to diagnose and fix common measurement errors. You'll practice evaluating question stems for clarity and precision, choosing between unipolar and bipolar response scales based on what you're actually measuring, and reducing cognitive load that forces respondent guessing.
By the end, you'll have the measurement expertise that distinguishes senior researchers: the ability to produce reliable insights that drive strategy and build lasting stakeholder trust.

Workshop Format

Most online guidance about writing survey questions provides disconnected rules ("avoid double-barreled questions"). This workshop connects best practices to the Cognitive Response Process where you think from the respondent’s perspective and understand why common errors happen and how to avoid them. In addition, this workshop goes to a higher level and discusses how some rules are more nuanced, and context dependent where opposite guidelines are used in different situations. After a focused breakdown of the Cognitive Response Process model with practical best practices to avoid measurement errors, you'll work to diagnose real-world survey errors across comprehension, retrieval, judgment, and response.

Defend your survey design with scientific principles

Articulate why you chose specific response scales, wording, and question structures using the Cognitive Response Process framework. Preempt stakeholder criticism by explaining how your design choices reduce interpretation variance, cognitive load, and measurement error—making your data harder to dismiss.

Diagnose why similar questions produce conflicting results

Identify how subtle differences in question structure trigger different cognitive processes.
